Week overview and updates: I will be in a Microsoft training Tuesday and Wednesday. Your child will log into Math class as normal and will have an independent assignment to work on during math class. I will explain the expectations to the students on Monday. I will be taking a class participation grade on those days for completing the independent work assigned.
We are beginning our fifth week of virtual learning. Some of the students are struggling to stay engaged and participate in class. This will affect their ability to learn the math being taught each day. It is very important for your student to keep the camera on during math class, so that I can check for his/her understanding of the lesson. Please continue to check your student’s grades in Power School. We will be conducting virtual parent teacher conferences this week. We have a limited number of spaces and unfortunately cannot meet with every family. We will send an email to the families that we would like to meet with during this first conference time. If you do not receive an email and you would like to schedule a conference, please email your child’s homeroom teacher and we will do our best to find a time to meet with you. As always, you can request to meet with your child’s teachers if you have any concerns. Monday: Module 1 Lesson 12 Module 1 Lesson 12 Multiply a decimal fraction by single-digit whole numbers, including using estimation to confirm the placement of the decimal point. Homework: 10 minutes of IXL using the skills: I 2, I 5, I 7 (Check Analytics for complete minutes) Tuesday: Module 1 Lesson 13- Divide decimals by single-digit whole numbers involving easily identifiable multiples using place value understanding and relate to a written method. Homework: NONE Week overview and updates:
We will start taking a weekly mental math quiz this week. Students should review their multiplication facts. We will start with 20 basic multiplication facts and have a 2 minute timer. In a few weeks, we will begin using the basic multiplication and division facts in larger problems (the fifth grade version). Examples: 30 x 6000 = or 35 x 103 = or 30,000 ÷ 50 = When we change to the “fifth grade version” of the mental math quiz, the students will have 5 min. This grade will be recorded as a “project” grade and be worth 5% of the total grade. Knowing the multiplication facts fluently is a key component to 5th grade math this year!! Monday: Module 1 Vocabulary Test; Module 1 Lesson 5 Name decimal fractions in expanded, unit, and word forms by applying place value reasoning. Homework: Module 1 Lesson 5 Tuesday: Module 1 Lesson 6 Compare decimal fractions to the thousandths using like units and express comparisons with >, <, =. Homework: 10 min of IXL using the skill G 10, G 11, G 12 Wednesday: Module 1 Lesson 7 Round a given decimal to any place using place value understanding and the vertical number line. We will complete a classwork assignment on decimals for a grade. Homework: Mid Module 1 Study guide will come home. It will be due Friday, Sept. 18 Thursday: Mental Math (Multiplication Facts) Quiz Module 1 Lesson 8 Round a given decimal to any place using place value understanding and the vertical number line. Homework: Continue working on the Mid Module Study Guide Friday: Study Guide is due. We will go over the answers and review for the Mid Module Test. We will also complete a classwork assignment on rounding. Homework: Study for Mid Module Test Monday, September 21 Thank you so much for all of your patience the first week of school! It was SO good to see student faces and meet all of the 5th graders!
